When you hear the word hybrid, you usually think of a Prius, right? Slow, boring but great on fuel economy. We are now in a new era where hybrid technology is used for performance, rather than fuel savings. Just take a look at the latest hypercars in recent years. The McLaren P1, the Porsche 918, even the Ferrari LaFerrari. All have hybrid systems using electric motors to fill in for the gas engine when it's not at peak performance.
The MDX Sport Hybrid is the same way. It uses three electric motors, just like the NSX supercar. One assisting the V6, and two out back independently powering the rear wheels. The benefit of electric motors is instant torque off the line, creating a large crossover with sporty pick up. The advantage of independent motors in the back, is true torque vectoring. Not only can the outside motor spin faster than the other, the inside motor can also use regenerative breaking to create a greater torque difference. It's really clever stuff and creates a fun driving experience.
